Background of the Study

Automation has emerged as a transformative force in retail businesses, offering solutions that enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and improve customer experiences. Automated technologies such as inventory management systems, self-checkout kiosks, and customer relationship management (CRM) tools have revolutionized retail operations globally (Okoro et al., 2023). In Nigeria, automation is gradually being adopted, particularly in urban retail settings, to address challenges such as inefficiency, long wait times, and human errors.

Gombe State, a growing commercial hub in northeastern Nigeria, has witnessed increased adoption of automation in department stores. Despite these advancements, many retailers still face challenges such as high implementation costs, lack of technical expertise, and resistance to change. Furthermore, the overall impact of automation on retail business performance in this region remains underexplored. While existing literature has established the benefits of automation in developed economies (Adekunle & Ibrahim, 2024), localized research that considers the unique economic and cultural context of Gombe State is necessary.

Statement of the Problem

The retail sector in Gombe State struggles with inefficiencies such as inaccurate inventory records, slow transaction processes, and limited scalability. Automation has the potential to address these challenges, yet its adoption remains inconsistent across department stores. Factors such as high implementation costs, limited access to technological infrastructure, and resistance from employees hinder the widespread use of automated solutions.

Additionally, there is limited empirical research on the effectiveness of automation in improving business performance in Gombe State. This knowledge gap prevents retailers from making informed decisions about adopting and optimizing automated systems. This study aims to critically analyze the role of automation in Nigerian retail businesses, focusing on its impact on department stores in Gombe State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the extent of automation adoption in department stores in Gombe State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of automation on operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  3. To identify challenges and opportunities associated with automation in retail businesses in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the extent of automation adoption in department stores in Gombe State?
  2. How does automation influence operational efficiency and customer satisfaction in retail businesses?
  3. What challenges and opportunities do department stores face in implementing automation?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Automation adoption significantly improves operational efficiency in department stores.
  2. Automation has a positive impact on customer satisfaction in retail businesses.
  3. Challenges such as high costs and technical barriers negatively affect automation adoption.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on department stores in Gombe State, examining the adoption and impact of automation technologies. It excludes other retail formats such as supermarkets and open markets. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and the exclusion of external factors such as government policies and economic conditions.

Definitions of Terms
